What the Chakra?

By Zoe Mc Clurg
What the Chakra?

We know it is popular, we know it is in style, we know its colourful and we know it’s spiritual but what is chakra jewellery really about?

If you are anything like me, you’ll be wondering what is a Chakra? What are the Seven Chakra Stones?

I embarked on two seperate journeys, the first of self discovery on a quest to heal my inner child and the second, a quest to find out more about healing crystals for business purposes. Little did I know, both journeys would inadvertantly collide and I would find myself on the same path for two purposes, work and personal growth.

How I discovered Natural Healing Gemstones

When I first started making jewellery I did not know anything about natural gemstones. I was using regular beads which was nice but something was missing. I wanted my jewellery to have power and meaning and not just be aesthetically pleasing.

I had had a few customers ask me if I made jewellery with healing gemstones so I thought, why not...

I decided to look in natural gemstones, what their meanings and healing properties were.

I wanted to find out what was behind the Natural Healing Gemstone trend so I started designing with natural gemstones such as Moonstone, Amethyst, Lava, Chalcedony...

To be honest, I never really believed in all of that so my first reaction was skeptical .... Stones with power?! OKAY 🙄

The power of the mind

I have a lot of health issues linked to my auto immune disorder as I discuss in my other blog post about Lupus. As I went through the sickness and the remission, I learned about how the mind is so much more powerful than we give it credit for. We rely on medication to help us feel better when we actually have the power in ourselves that is just waiting to be unleashed.

So, while I don’t know for a fact that Amethyst can dissolve stress and anxiety, I do know that if I am wearing a piece of jewellery made of Amethyst and I believe that it will dispel my rage and anger, that is exactly what is going to happen. That is the power of our minds. Just as our mind can makes us feel pain when we are stressed or scared, it can just as easily give us the strength to overcome it.

Healing My Inner Child, the Journey

As I started to learn more about crystals and natural gemstones, I was facinated from a professional point of view as the niche for natural healing gemtone jewellery is very wide and I knew it would be popular but I did think that would be helpful from a personal perspective.

I had been on a journey to discover myself and heal my inner child for a few years at that point but I had reached a dead end. I was going around in circles, trying to shut down my inner child rather than embrace her and let her be a part of the journey. I wanted to get to know the real me. Not the “me” that I was showing to the world but the genuine, authentic “me” who, if I was honest, I never really got to know.

A little before the lockdown, I had reached a very low point in my life after years of therapy and self help books, I wasn’t seeing any progress despite my trying and I was starting to sink into it rather than fight it.
I was suffering from severe anxiety and depression which are both very common with Lupus patients. I then discovered Brene Brown’s work around Shame, Vulnerabilty and Courage and my journey began...
A journey of self discovery and wholehearted living which Brene calls it, which I was hoping would lead to connecting with my inner child. I had come to the conclusion that this was my main issue. More than, self care, self love and healthy bounderies which were also some of my long term goals, bonding with my inner child seemed like it was a more pressing matter. If I wasn’t at peace with her, she would continue to take over my life and I needed to take control of my life and put her in the back seat.
During this journey, I was learning to listen to my inner child rather than shut it down, something I had tendancy to do. Well, trying to shut it down because, as I am sure you know, the inner child doesn’t keep quiet. She needed to be heard, understood and most of all, loved.
I didn’t understand that at first.
I was diving deeper into the inner child healing and I was reading books on reparenting yourself and learning how to give yourself the unconditional love that you might not have got as a child. Brene Brown’s work completely changed my life. I found out that the heavy load I was carrying around was shame.
Shame is what was stopping me from being my authentic and vulnerable self.
I also realise, most importantly, that I was not alone. This was a life changer. I wasn’t crazy and I wasn’t in a unique situation. We are all out there, suffering in silence and it’s when we can open ourselves up and be vulnerable that we can share our experiences and begin to heal.

So, what about the chakras?

One day I was watching a Youtube video about healing the inner child and the person who was talking about this said that when our Adult self is not in synergy with our inner child, that usually means that our Root Chakra is blocked.
Hum, I had heard of chakras, I knew a bit about the colourful chakra jewellery but I was intrigued and wanted to learn more....
The way she was describing the symtoms of a blocked root chakra completely resonnated with me... Feeling unsafe and disconnected with no sense of belonging, difficulties with intimacy, feeling isolated, anxiety, depression... all this could be traced back to one’s childhood.
The list was long but I could relate to everything she was saying.
I had an extremely unstable and difficult childhood which I felt continued into my adult life where I just never felt completely safe nor a sense of belonging.
I feel like my child self takes over when my adult self cannot handle a situation and this had to change.
She went on to explain that the root chakra can be unblocked with meditation, yoga, affirmations and healing crystals.
I needed to be grounded and heal my root chakra so my inner child could be at peace and I could finally let my adult self fully takeover.
As you can imagine, I spent the next few hours binge watching facinating Youtube videos about the chakras...
What are the Chakras?

The chakras are basically energy points are connected to different aspects of your physical and emotional life. When they are open, your body and mind are in harmony with your life's purpose.

However, blocked or misaligned chakras are associated with unhappiness and apathy.

Each chakra is associated with certain stones. It’s believed that the stone’s energy can stabilize the specific chakra.

The Root Chakra & My Inner Child

The Root Chakra which is also known as the first Chakra, its located at the base of the spine. It is linked to how grounded you are in life. If you have unresolved childhood issues or traumatic events that may have left you feeling unsafe, abandoned or insecure, your root chakra will be unbalanced. You will feel stuck in your life and unable to move forward and build authentic connections.

This was a revelation for me... I needed to rebalance my root chakra in order to move forward. I continued my research.

“If the root chakra becomes unbalanced, you may feel "stuck" and just can't seem to move forward in life.  You may feel ungrounded, unsafe with a depleting sense of self.  This generally happens following traumatic eventsfand major life changes.  A blockage in the root chakra prevents the release of grief, guilt, and sadness, contributing the the inability to move forward and preventing you from following your destiny.”

Common psychological symptoms of an unbalanced root chakra include  loneliness, insecurities, feeling ungrounded, unconfident, abandoned, indecisive, depressed, anxious, addictions, phobias, obsessions.

Meditation on the first chakra can help you feel safe, secure, grounded and stable as you navigate the fertility journey. When you are rooted, you feel fully alive, joyful, curious and able to trust. This chakra teaches that all is one.

The root Chakra is symbolised by the colour red and there are a few different crystals that support the root chakra, some of the best known include Brown Jasper, Red Jasper, Smoky Quartz, Hematite, Red Carnelian, Mahogany Obsidian, Tourmaline, Rhodonite, Garnet and Bloodstone.

The Sacral Chakra:

The Sacral Chakra is the second chakra, it is located just below the navel, right in the center of your lower belly and in your back it is located in the lumbar spine and associated with the colour orange and the element, water.  Some of its corresponding body areas and organs are the genitals, lower back and abdominal.

The sacral chakra is the centre of emotions, feelings and stimulates pleasure. It plays an active role in our sexuality and expression of our sexual needs and desires.

When the sacral is out of balance, a person may experience feelings of fear, depression, manic or emotional instability, feeling overwhelmed, loss of imagination or creativity, sexual dysfunction, reproductive issues, and even addiction.

Some of the healing crystals related to the sacral chakra are amber Agate, Orange Calcite, Red Jasper, Citrine and Sunstone.

The Solar Plexus:

The Solar Plexus, refers to the Third Chakra. It spins in the area around the abdomen above the belly button up to the breastbone. Meaning “lustrous gem” in Sanskrit, the Solar Plexus or Manipura chakra provides a source of personal power and relates to self-esteem, warrior energy, and the power of transformation.

It's the chakra of our personal power. This means it's related to our self-esteem and self-confidence.

Blockage of the third chakra can lead to shyness, loneliness, difficulty to  forgive or a tendency to lack empathy.

It is represented by the colour yellow and some of the crystals linked to it are Yellow Calcite, Golden Mookaite, Tiger's Eye, Pyrite and Citrine.

The Heart

The Heart Chakra, or anahata chakra in Sanskrit, is located at the center of the spine at heart level. Anahata, translates to, “unhurt.”

Accordingly, the heart chakra acts as the individual’s center of compassion, empathy, love, and forgiveness. This chakra governs one’s senses of trust, fearlessness, peace, generosity, gratitude, and connectedness, as well as change and transformation, healthy boundaries, depth in relationships with others, emotional control, and love for oneself.

A blocked heart chakra can lead to anxiety, depression, dependence on others for fulfilment, jealousy, hhigh expectations of others, harsh judgement of other people or needing acceptance of others.

It is symoblised by the colour green and some of the crystals linked to it are Green Jasper, Emerald, Amazonite green Jade.

The Throat Chakra:

The Throat Chakra, or Vishuddha, is the fifth chakra. It’s located at the base of your throat.

Practitioners say the throat chakra is the center of communication, emotion, and creativity. It affects your ability to be honest and express your thoughts.

When your throat chakra is imbalanced or blocked, it can be difficult for energy to flow in the area. This may cause issues like difficulty expressing your thoughts, feeling timid or shy, talking without thinking, dishonesty, insensitivity, insecurity, social anxiety or difficulty making sound decisions.

The throat chakra is associated with the colour Turquoise and some of the stones include Amazonite, Turquoise Howlite and Aquamarine.

The Third

The Third Eye Chakra is the sixth chakra. Located on the forehead, between the eyebrows, it is the center of intuition and foresight. The function of the third eye chakra is driven by the principle of openness and imagination.

When your third eye chakra is unbalanced, you may feel an inability to plan or set goals, denial, narrow-mindedness, poor vision/memory, paranoia, nightmares or a lack of imagination.

The third eye chakra is associated with the color blue and can be balanced with the help of certain crystals such as Spectrolite, Lapis Lazuli or Watermelon Tourmaline.

Last but not least... The Crown Chakra:

The Crown Chakra is the seventh chakra and is located at the top of the head.

It is the gateway to spiritual wisdom. It also connects us to the wider universe, helping each person feel their connection to the universal energy..

A blocked crown chakra leads to spiritual distress. Symptoms of a blockage include Isolation and loneliness, inability to connect with others, lack of direction, inability to set or maintain goals and feeling disconnected spiritually.

The crown chakra is represented by the color white and deep purple. The most powerful crystals linked to the crown chakra are Amethyst, Moonstone and Quartz.

So, what next?

Now that I have done my research, I need to put it into practice.

So, I decided why not... I needed a change, something drastic and I was willing to try it.

I started waking up 30 minutes earlier than usual every day and doing guided meditation and chanting centered around the root chakra.

Within days I started to feel a difference. I talked about my discovery with my therapist, Joanne who I had met through my Brene Brown Discussion groups. She was so encouraging and positive and she took the journey with me.

I felt the change pretty quickly, the meditations were often referring to mountains or trees, something very grounding that I was connecting with. Some of the affirmations were super powerful as well such as “ I am enough”, “I have enough”. “ I am strong”, “I am grounded”....

Repeating these phrases out loud on a regular basis quickly started to sink in and I began to feel more grounded.

I sent Joanne my meditation videos and we did some visualisation exercises.  She was the one who suggested that I visualise myself driving a car with my inner child next to me. I explained to her that a lot of the time, it was like I was in the passenger seat and my inner child was driving recklessly and controling every situation. From then on, I felt more grounded, I could take control and the child inside of me, who I thought I had to shut out, was actually a big part of my journey. She could sit next to me and enjoy the ride, she could see how much I had grown and she could relax and be at peace. I kept reminding her that I was doing ok and that I didn’t need her to protect me anymore but that I could protect her instead and help her feel safe.

I started learning how to set healthy bounderies, I quit smoking within a day with nothing but willpower and motivation, I learned how to spot my triggers and self regulate which was a big obstacle throughout my life. I began to be kinder and more gentle with myself and even though self love is a never-ending journey, I had just taken a huge step in the right direction.

At this point, I understood what the chakras were and how important it is to have them balanced, I was finally ready to design chakra jewellery that I understood and believed in. It was no longer a fad or a fashion trend for me, it was vital to my well being.

I could empower women as well as offer them beautiful accessories. This became my goal, creating jewellery with purpose and power.

Back to designing jewellery...Let the fun begin

I was ready to start creating. I took the list of crystals linked to each chakra and wanted to see what they looked like. I wanted vibrant, deep colors. I did a Google image search for Chakra Jewellery to see what was already out there and I thought to myself (with a little too much confidence, I am well aware) “Meh, I can do better”.

After doing a lot of reasearch, I made up a list of the stones that I wanted to use for my chakra collection.

Red Carnelian for the Root Chakra
- Brings a self-confidence built on fearlessness.
Amber Agate for the Sacral Chakra
- Attracts love and provokes happiness and pleasure.
Tiger’s Eye for the Solar Plexus
- Promoting mental clarity and dispelling fear and anxiety.
Green Jasper for the Heart Chakra
- It helps you overcome obsessive thought patterns.
Turquoise Howlite for the Throat Chakra
- it is gentle, soothing and calms the energy around you.
Lapis Lazuli for the Third Eye Chakra
It brings harmony and deep inner self-knowledge and encourages self-awareness.
Amethyst for the Crown Chakra
it can help rid the mind of negative thoughts and bring forth humility, sincerity, and spiritual wisdom.

These were all powerful stones but also vibrant colours that would look amazing as jewellery.

The next step was to order the beads but also to make sure that they were genuine. I found a supplier in Thailand, I reached out and ordered on strand of each stone to check the quality. Then the wait began... It took over six weeks due to the pandemic.

I was so excited and tracking the order each step of the way. They finally arrived and they were beautiful. I followed all the recommended steps to verify the authenticity of the stones and I went ahead and placed a bulk order.

Another six weeks or waiting went by until finally ...

Which led to

And finally, my most popular set...

The chakra collection has now become the most sold jewellery on my website and I am so happy to have gone through what I like to call my “Chakra Journey” for myself firstly, and also for my business and my customers.

I hope that if you are wearing one of my chakra pieces, it brings you comfort, strength and inner peace.

Thank you for taking the time to read about me and my journey.

Much Love ❤️
